London’s leafy and graceful neighbourhood of Highgate is the inspiration for these classic cabled mitts. Home to Jude Law, Jamie Oliver and Kate Moss, Highgate boasts Georgian terraces and upmarket restaurants. The wide open space of Hampstead Heath and peaceful Highgate Woods are a joy in all seasons.

Highgate Mitts is a unisex design that will please both the knitter and the wearer. The mitts are perfect for an autumn stroll in the woods, followed by refreshments in a fancy coffee shop…lockdown restrictions permitting!

Eye-catching cables flow gracefully from the twisted rib cuffs. Central thumb increases create an unusual bias detail, and cleverly placed decreases ensure a perfect fit af the top of the hand. Using just half a skein of cosy DK-weight yarn, you’ll whip these mitts up in a flash. Who’s ready for some gift knitting?

If you like this cable design, then stay tuned for an adult-sized Highgate Cardigan, coming on Thursday 19th November. Sign up for my newsletter, here, or follow me on instagram @unicornknitdesigns to find out when it goes live.

Construction
These mitts are knit in the round, from bottom up. Knitting begins with a twisted rib cuff. The main section is worked with a cable panel on the back of the hand, and an integrated thumb gusset. Sts are held for the thumb, and knitting continues for the top of the hand, ending with a twisted rib edging. Sts are returned to the needle and the thumb is completed in the round, with a twisted rib edging.
