The Oxford University Companion

Nobody knows precisely when Oxford began, though teaching is documented here as early as 1096. This Companion reads a federation of nearly forty rival colleges, introduces a private police force that patrolled the streets in bowler hats for 174 years, and tells the story of exactly how Oxford's most famous rivalry began: not as friendly competition, but as a medieval tragedy that drove a generation of scholars out of the city entirely.
