This Sun and Moon Line Art Project is a black-and-white drawing lesson that teaches the Element of Art: Line along with creative thinking, composition and contrast. It is designed for upper elementary and middle school, Grades 4 to 7, and fills 1 to 3 art classes.

Students use a fine tip marker or black colored pencil to create a sun and moon line art composition that explores repetition, pattern and movement. A critical thinking read and respond activity and a writing prompt add reflection and cross-curricular connections, so it works as an introduction to line or a review.

WHAT'S INCLUDED (NON-EDITABLE)

  • Visual art lesson plan exploring the Element of Art: Line
  • About the Element of Art Line page
  • Step-by-step instructions with visuals, in both PowerPoint and PDF formats
  • Sun and Moon line art example
  • Writing prompt page
  • Read and Respond critical thinking reading and written response pages
  • Rubric, assessment and reflections, plus compare and contrast, artist statements and sustainable studio habits responses
  • Instructions for using fine tip markers or black colored pencil

HOW TO USE IT

Teach it as part of an Element of Art: Line unit, especially when you are focusing on contrast and composition. It also works as a cross-curricular art and ELA activity or as a sub plan that asks for deeper thinking.

The Read and Respond pages work well for early finishers or as a cross-curricular assessment. Include as much of the writing and critical thinking as suits your class and timeframe.
