Kindergarten Back to School Name Art Lesson Butterfly Fine Motor Symmetry Art
This Kindergarten Butterfly Fine Motor Name Art Lesson is a hands-on art project where students create a bright butterfly artwork that features their own name. Along the way they practice name recognition, fine motor skills and symmetry through drawing, tracing, cutting, gluing, coloring and decorating.
It is designed for Kindergarten and suits art teachers, classroom teachers, homeschool families and substitute teachers. Use it for back to school, All About Me lessons, spring art, butterfly units, fine motor centers or name recognition practice.

WHAT STUDENTS LEARN
Students learn that their name is a special word that belongs to them, and that letters are made from lines, shapes and curves. They practice using the small muscles in their hands and fingers as they trace, color, cut, glue, write and decorate. They also explore symmetry, noticing how butterfly wings can have two sides that look the same or almost the same.
Students can use the templates or the Build-a-Butterfly page to choose the head, abdomen, top wing and bottom wing. This gives them support while still leaving room for creative choices, and the finished butterflies make a personal, colorful classroom display.
