About the artwork

Pierre-Joseph Redouté, often called the Raphael of flowers, painted the roses at the Empress Joséphine's garden at Malmaison. This pompon rose comes from Les Roses, published in Paris between 1817 and 1824. The background paper is left unstitched, so the rose sits on clean fabric just like the original plate.
