This is a pattern for a handknit coaster with embroidered elements.

Stitches are cast on and the coaster is worked before blocking and embroidery.
This pattern includes helpful photos to show the sts at various stages, in addition to charts. One chart shows the elements drawn on the grid and the other is a plain chart, so you may experiment.
If you have never embroidered before, you may need to look up more detailed instructions. There are no instructions for individual embroidery sts.
yarn:
Plötulopi – Unspun Icelandic by Ístex
DK / 8 ply; 100% Icelandic
328yds (300m) / 100g
approximate yarn amounts (individual coaster):
4g; 13yds/12m
Plus small bits of yarn for embroidery details in a variety of colours. Plan on approximately 1yd/1m per coaster per colour used.
needles:
3.5mm (us no 4) DPNs 6in/15cm; set of 4
4.0mm (us no 6) DPNs 6in/15cm; set of 4
gauge:
5 sts x 6 rows = 1in/2.5cm measured over stockinette
Due to the nature of Plotulopi, I use 4.0mm on the RS (knit sts) and 3.5mm on the WS (purl sts). Use any needles that work best for you.
approximate finished size:
4.75in/ 12cm (width) x 4.75in/ 12cm (height)
additional tools:
needle to weave in ends, blocking pins, needles for embroidery
