Mira and Storm, A Winter Adventure
Summary: Mira und Storm by Heidi Korrodi (2026)
This is a gentle children's picture book about a nine-year-old girl named Mira, her beloved horse Storm, and the animals on her family's snowbound farm. It's dedicated to "all children who love animals" and to "the little miracles that sometimes wish to be found."
The setting and characters. Mira lives on a cozy farm at the edge of the woods with her parents, grandparents, brother, and sister—plus a household of animals. The cast includes Mira (brave and kind), Storm (a big brown horse with a gentle heart and her best friend), Bear (the loyal farm dog), Minka (the clever old farm cat), and a tiny lost kitten.
The story. On a still winter morning, Mira wakes before everyone else—her favorite hour, when the whole farm is silent under the snow. She heads to the warm stable to do her daily chores: feeding Storm, brushing his coat, checking his hooves, and talking softly to him. Then she saddles up and rides out alone across the glittering white fields and into the quiet, snow-cushioned woods, a place where she feels completely at home.
During the ride, Mira shows her calm, instinctive way with animals. She and Storm pause to share a still, trusting moment with a wild deer. Moments later a large bird bursts from a bush and startles Storm, but instead of panicking, Mira soothes him with gentle hands and a low voice until he settles—a small scene that shows the deep trust between them.
The heart of the story. After Storm calms down, Mira hears a faint meowing. She follows it to a hollow oak and finds a tiny grey tabby kitten, half-buried in the snow, freezing and trembling. She gently tucks it inside her jacket against her heart and rides carefully home, with Storm walking more softly than ever, as if he understands the precious cargo.
The happy ending. Back at the farm, Mira dries Storm off and rewards him, then settles the kitten into the warm straw—where old Minka sniffs it and begins licking it clean as if it were her own. The kitten purrs for the first time; it has found a family. That evening, the whole family gathers around the kitchen table while the kitten sleeps in Mira's lap. Her grandmother tells her, "You saved a life." Mira looks forward to tomorrow, when she'll care for Storm and her new kitten too—because nothing in the world makes her happier than caring for those she loves.
