Cape Town is South Africa’s top tourist destination at the Southern tip of the Continent. The Company gardens still offer a tranquil area at the foot of the famous Table Mountain. Nearby are historic buildings; the Houses of Parliament, St. Georges Cathedral, spiritual home of Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the Slave Lodge built by Dutch pioneers.
On a clear day a trip to the top of Table Mountain is a must. The Cableway makes this easy; rising effortlessly from 1000 feet to the Table Top at 3500 feet in just 5 minutes. The views are spectacular, ranging from Lions Head and the Atlantic seaboard in the west, to the City Bowl below and Devils Peak in the east. In the bay beyond Lions Head is Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years.
Down on the coast, Camps Bay offers wonderful views of the Twelve Apostles and the ocean. Leaving Hout Bay by way of the scenic drive cut into the cliffs, we pass the pristine beach at Nordhoek before entering the Cape Nature reserve and arriving at the Cape of Good Hope.
On the eastern coast of the Cape is Boulders bay; home of a colony of diminutive African penquins. Our final stop before Cape Town is the renowned Kirstenbosch Botanical gardens, set below Table Mountain.
