Element of Art Value Art Project Eye Art Lesson Grayscale Shading Art Activity
This Value Eye Drawing Art Lesson teaches the Element of Art: Value to middle school artists in Grades 5 to 8. Students draw a realistic human eye with soft pastels and charcoal on black paper, exploring value, shading, contrast and realism.
Students learn to identify highlights, midtones and shadows and apply soft pastel with control, moving beyond outlines into full form. The lesson is fully planned with step-by-step instructions, rubrics, assessment tools and reflection worksheets, so art specialists, classroom teachers and homeschool parents can teach it with confidence.
WHAT TEACHERS ARE SAYING
★★★★ “This was a fun project that my students were able to complete in one 40-minute class, plus a few minutes to add the final details at the beginning of the next class. We also tried it with black-light chalk for Halloween, and it was pretty cool. It looks like it would be harder than it is, which is always great for building student confidence.” Kesha N.
