The Little Bookshelf

A Gentle Beginning to Reading

A gentle, systematic beginning-to-reading curriculum built around the books you already own and the life you are already living.

You do not need a shelf full of curriculum to teach a child well.

You need good books, ordinary life, a little time together and, when it comes to learning to read, a clear path to follow.

The Little Bookshelf brings those things together.

Across 26 flexible A–Z sections, you’ll explore beautiful books, everyday experiences, nature, cooking, making, conversation and play while following a carefully sequenced pathway into reading.

But this is not a traditional “letter of the week” program.

The alphabet gives each section its theme and invites you into your own bookshelf and everyday life. Beneath that sits a separate, systematic reading pathway that builds step by step.

The letter gives you a doorway.

The bookshelf gives you the story.

Real life gives you the curriculum.

Inside you’ll find:

  • 26 flexible A–Z bookshelf themes
  • short, explicit 10-minute reading lessons
  • systematic, cumulative phonics
  • phonemic awareness and listening inside words
  • blending and early decoding
  • early spelling and writing
  • carefully controlled words, sentences and little texts for your child to read
  • simple guidance for choosing books from your own shelves
  • hands-on invitations using ordinary things you already have
  • nature and outdoor noticing
  • ideas for including older siblings without creating a second homeschool
  • a simple Alphabet Wall and Little Alphabet Pocket Book to grow alongside your child

There are no compulsory book purchases and no enormous supply list.

You do not need to complete every activity.

You do not need to manufacture a beautiful homeschool every Sunday night.

Read a book. Talk about it. Notice something. Go outside. Make something if you feel like it. Spend ten minutes teaching your child to read.

Then get on with your day.

A gentle curriculum with a strong reading foundation

The bookshelf side of this curriculum is intentionally free.

Follow an unexpected interest. Stay with a wonderful book. Skip an invitation. Spend three weeks on one section if you want to.

The reading pathway is different.

It is deliberately structured and cumulative so your child is not expected to guess words, memorise huge lists of sight words or read sounds they have never been taught.

Structured where structure matters, free where freedom matters.

And there is no need to race through A–Z.

Your family can continue exploring the bookshelf themes while slowing down, repeating or pausing the reading lessons whenever your child needs more time.

The bookshelf can wander. Reading builds step by step.

Who is it for?

The Little Bookshelf was created for children at the very beginning of learning to read and for the adult learning alongside them.

You might be a homeschooling parent, grandparent, teacher, carer or simply someone who wants a warm, practical way to help a child take their first steps into reading.

Older siblings can join the books, conversations and experiences too, responding at their own level without you having to prepare two separate lessons.

This isn’t about racing towards fluency.

It’s about giving a child strong foundations while protecting something just as important:

the feeling that books are joyful, stories matter, and learning to read is worth doing.

Read · talk · notice · play · make · learn to read.
