When the Chatbot Is the Only Thing Open

A patient's guide to what generative AI can actually do for your health

Forty-six per cent of Canadian adults asked an AI chatbot for medical advice last year. Sixty-eight per cent would rather wait two weeks for a human doctor than take an instant answer from a machine. Both figures come from the same May 2026 national survey.

Read together, they retire the story most people tell about this. Nobody is confusing software for medicine. They are typing into a text box at two in the morning because it answers in four seconds and the waiting list answers in four months, and because more than six million Canadians have no family doctor at all. The behaviour is rational. This article looks at the conditions that make it rational, then hands you something practical to do about it.

🩺 The Canadian Medical Association's 2026 tracking survey found that people who acted on AI health advice reported harms at five times the rate of those who did not. The article refuses to sensationalize that number. It reads it as an association rather than a cause, explains who is actually turning to chatbots, and shows why the figure still matters.

📋 A concrete list of what these tools genuinely do well, including translating a discharge summary into plain English and turning a scattered symptom history into a timeline a clinician can scan in ninety seconds.

🚫 A shorter and firmer list of what should never be handed to one, including deciding whether something is an emergency and interpreting lab results without qualified review.

⚖️ Eleven American states passed health AI laws in the first half of 2026, several banning AI therapy outright. Canada has no equivalent framework. Federal AI legislation died with Bill C-27, and a consumer chatbot is not a medical device.

🧭 A four-part working discipline: ask better questions, check anything that matters, connect the output to real people, and document what a tool suggested against what better evidence later confirmed.

Written for people living with long COVID, ME/CFS, fibromyalgia and chronic pain, for the caregivers keeping the records, and for anyone whose clinic closed at five.

Read it before your next appointment, and take your questions in with you.
