Monkey See, Monkey Do

Civilization Copies a Master Design

A field worth over $33 billion is built on one idea: copy what living things already do.

• Flight from birds, sonar from bats
• Spider silk: stronger than anything our chemistry has matched
• The bacterial flagellum: a rotary motor spinning near 100,000 RPM
• The ribosome: a 3D printer running on digital code
• DNA: denser data storage than any human medium

MIT, Boeing and the U.S. Navy are all copying. Design first, imitation second: offered as a pattern, not proof. Find an exception if you can.
