SOLD AS SEEN | Interactive ESL Mystery | Choose Your Path B1-B2 | No Prep
A ready-to-use interactive English mystery for B1-B2 learners (approximately ages 12-14). Download it, open it and teach, without preparing worksheets, cards or extra materials. Students read a spooky-but-not-gory mystery set at a British used-car dealership on Friday 31 October 1986, choose between two options at every decision point, and discover one of seven endings. The story has 112 routes.
THE MYSTERY
The windscreens at Pargeter's Prestige Motors keep smashing. The owner, Kev, blames a ghost, and tonight is GHOST NIGHT LATE OPENING. Students play a 13-year-old with a half-term job at the dealership. Who do they trust? What do they say? And what do they believe? Not every question has an answer, and the story keeps asking students to separate what they see, what people say and what they only guess.
HOW IT WORKS
- Every decision page ends with two buttons, A and B. Click or tap a button to jump to the page it names
- Each button is also labelled "Go to page N", so the story can still be followed if links do not work on a device
- There are 17 decision pages and 7 different endings. Every ending leads to a "Start again" page, so students can try another route
- Students read short illustrated story pages (about 150 words each). A typical route is about 10 pages; the shortest is 3
WHO IT IS FOR
- English learners at about CEFR B1-B2 (intermediate), approximately ages 12-14, in middle school and early high school
- ESL, EFL and ELL classes, English clubs, tutors and homeschoolers
- Whole class on a screen or projector, pairs on one device, or students reading independently
- Not designed for beginners (A1-A2) or for students who need a lot of vocabulary support
WHAT'S INCLUDED
1 PDF, 30 pages, A4 landscape (297 x 210 mm), about 25 MB:
- Cover, a "How this story works" page and a cast page with portraits
- 17 decision pages, each with two choices
- 7 ending pages and a "Start again" page
- A back cover
Not included: an answer key, comprehension questions, vocabulary lists or worksheets. This is a story to read and discuss, not a worksheet pack. Speaking and discussion happen when you run it with pairs or a class: students agree each choice and explain why.
PREPARATION
Open the PDF, show it on a screen or send it to students, and decide whether they work as a whole class, in pairs or on their own. There is nothing to print, cut or copy.
SCREEN USE
This resource is designed for laptops and tablets. Landscape viewing is recommended: in portrait the page is shown smaller and the text is harder to read. It is not designed for printing (the dark pages use a lot of ink). The A and B buttons are standard PDF links. They have been tested in a desktop browser's PDF viewer (Chrome); PDF viewers on phones and tablets vary and have not all been tested, so please try the file on your own device before class.
GOOD TO KNOW
- Set in Britain in 1986, so students meet period words such as half-term, tenner, log book and cassette
- Themes: a suspected ghost, smashed windscreens and a suspected car fraud. Spooky, not gory
- Written at about B1-B2 level, so expect some unfamiliar words
