Handprinted buckthorn lake, finished with white gold. Edition of 10.

Dimensions: 19.5x19.5 cm (print), 25x25 cm (matted)

WELLSPRING is the first in a new series of relief prints, made in the mokuhanga (Japanese woodblock) technique, with my own historical and plant-based colours.

Symbolism: The name of the Arabic letter 'Ayn ع has a number of meanings, among them: water spring, source, fountainhead. In this respect I'm using it as a symbol for the Source, whatever this may mean to you, and the dot that properly belongs to its twin letter Ghayn غ is there as a reminder that this wellspring dwells in the Unseen (غيب), well out of reach of human depradations and ownership claims.

Important note: This historical technique, the manual application of hand-prepared paint on a wooden block, results in every print being an individual: the texture and intensity of the printed colour are never exactly the same. Minor imperfections should be expected (they're invisible from a viewing distance, see the "group photo"). I embrace the gentle irregularities that reveal the hand behind the work, but if you're unsure of your own taste, please request close-up photos before buying.

A purchase is binding and indicates you understand the above is a feature of the artwork, not a fault. Returns will not be accepted.

Seconds include more noticeable faults when examined up close (specifically, chatter or a slight halo in places), but they still look good from viewing distance and would be a pity to discard, so they're available at a discount. They're also finished with gold and signed, but not numbered or matted (so you'll get a loose print).

Care instructions: Plant lakes, more stable than simple dyes, can enjoy a long lifespan when treated with care. Frame with UV protection glass, and hang away from direct sunlight (as all art should be).
