A lonely man. A strange affliction.

When you lose yourself, what is left behind?

When a mysterious affliction begins transforming lonely amateur archaeologist Orlando Balfour, he turns to the occult for answers. But every attempt at a cure only strips away another piece of his humanity.

Armed with an ancient alchemical text and a dwindling sense of self, he’s drawn deeper into a hidden world where transformation is just the beginning.

A Most Abhorrent Vessel is a 22K queer Gothic Gaslamp fantasy novella inspired by The Invisible Man, about ancient curses, existential dread, and what it means to be human. Perfect for readers who enjoy body horror, literary prose, and queer classic monster retellings.

It is the first book of the Wretched Creatures, an interconnected series of queer Gothic novellas inspired by classic monster literature, blending horror, torment, and yearning with existential transformations. Each volume follows a different protagonist, telling a complete, standalone story.

Content Warnings: mental illness, blood and violence, existential themes. Full list available at: marat.carrd.co

This story left me wanting to read more and more of Marat Earandel’s beautiful prose.
A Most Abhorrent Vessel is Gothic story about a closeted gay archeologist who turns away from science to try to cure a mysterious tribulation, inspired by the Invisible Man.
I felt pulled into Orlando’s turmoils and desperation. Marat is a wonder at using fews words to inspire incredible depth of feeling. As a neurodivergent queer person, I related to so much of Orlando’s experience. I loved the gothic gaslamp world on AMAV and I would read spin off novels about Moreau, Aphra, and Nicodemus.
This is a novella will I will be returning too every fall.
