PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY // comp. & arr. by Stefan Karl Schmid

Duration: approx. 7:00 min

Brief Description

With Persistence Of Memory Stefan Karl Schmid won the composition competition of the Federal Jazz Orchestra of Germany (BuJazzO) in 2013. The work is arranged for a standard big band instrumentation (see below). The 'even 8th's' piece, which belongs to the contemporary jazz genre, has a medium to high degree of difficulty and is characterized by complex harmonics expressed in various mixed movements and dense sound structures. A repeating 7-note pattern, introduced by the piano at the beginning, is the common thread running through the composition and is creatively processed both melodically and rhythmically.

Line-up and alternative parts
This composition is arranged for a big band consisting of five saxophones (2x as, 2x ts, bari), four trumpets and four trombones, as well as piano, double bass and drums. Optionally, a guitar and/or a vibraphone can be added to the rhythm section, making the ensemble sound more colorful and increasing the possibilities for solo accompaniment.
Woodwind doublings required are a flute in the 1st alto saxophone and a clarinet in the 1st tenor saxophone. If these instruments are not available, the provided alternative parts without doublings can be used. If the trombone solo in the original version is to be played by another instrument, additional 'solo parts' are available for C-, Bb- and Eb-instruments. The backings that may not be played as a result can possibly be taken over by the section neighbor or simply omitted.
