This Bee Pattern Art Lesson introduces the Principle of Design: Pattern. Students create a bright bee artwork using tempera paint, construction paper and wax crayon, and learn how artists use pattern to bring rhythm, unity and excitement into their art.

It is built for busy classroom teachers, art teachers, substitute teachers and homeschool educators, with the step-by-step slides, lesson hook, reflections and rubric all ready to go. Students start with a picture puzzle hook, experiment with repeating lines and shapes, and personalize their own bee. Younger students (K to 2) can follow the structure closely, while older students (grades 3 to 4) can extend it with more complex patterns.

HOW TO USE IT

Project the tutorial slides or demonstrate live while students follow along. Start with the picture puzzle hook and the KWL chart, read about pattern together, then use the line and pattern examples and the bee drawing handout as students plan their artwork. The reflections, artist statement, rubric and peer and self-assessment pages cover assessment without extra grading stress, and the extension prompts give early finishers somewhere to go next.

It works in a classroom, at the kitchen table or as a no-prep sub plan.
