Computer Organization

Computer Organization takes an "under the hood" look at how computers actually work. Centered around an architectural design known as the Von Neumann Architecture (named after polymath John von Neumann) the books explores the basics of digital logic, number systems and the structure of the CPU and memory. Basic assembly language is explored using an simulator that steps you through the actual execution of a simple assembly language, providing insights as to actually happens internally as instructions are executed by the computer.

In addition to the basics of conventional computer architectures, alternative designs for computer systems are explored, tracking developments occurring in the area of artificial intelligence. Topics include the role of Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) in high speed computing and the deployment of computing power to hand-held devices, i.e. The Internet of Things (IOT). An appendix covering the Raspberry Pi, a widely used edge device provides tips how to get started in this exciting area.
