Shift the Script: The Low-Demand Language Deck (40 Cards) + Interactive Companion Tool
40 practical, colour-coded phrase swaps to reduce anxiety, respect autonomy, and prevent daily meltdowns — plus a searchable interactive companion tool.
When a nervous system is wired to perceive demands as a threat to autonomy, everyday requests can quickly trigger a fight, flight, or freeze response. This isn't defiance — it's a self-preservation instinct.
Shift the Script: The Low-Demand Language Deck gives you 40 practical phrase swaps to change the shape of those moments. By using declarative language, offering shared control, and focusing on connection over compliance, you lower environmental pressure and help your child feel safe enough to engage—one phrase at a time.
What's inside
40 full "Instead of... Shift to..." cards, each with a "why it works" explanation, colour-coded across five everyday categories:
- Morning & Getting Ready — shoes, teeth, getting dressed, and the rest of the morning scramble
- Transitions & Leaving the House — the car, the school run, saying goodbye, screen time endings
- Mealtimes — sitting at the table, trying new foods, drinking water, using cutlery
- Chores & Daily Tasks — tidying up, homework, laundry, pet care
- Emotional Regulation & Boundaries — big feelings, safety, apologies, communication differences
Every card follows the same principles: declarative statements over direct commands, information about the environment rather than instructions to the person, and genuine, non-demanding support.
Plus, a free interactive companion tool
This deck comes with a browser-based tool you can save straight to your phone — no login, no app store, nothing to install:
- Browse & Flip — all 40 cards, filterable by category with live search, so you can find the right swap for the moment you're in without scrolling past 35 irrelevant cards
- My Go-To Cards — star the swaps that fit your family, building your own quick-reference shortlist so week two onward you're glancing at your own 8–10 favourites, not all 40
- My Practice Log — an ongoing record of situations and how they went, optionally linked to the card you used, building into a real history over time
- Card of the Day — a different card greets you each time you open the tool, keeping the language fresh even on weeks you're not actively browsing
Who this is for
Parents of PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) children, or any child with a strong need for autonomy where everyday requests tend to spark resistance. If the free 5-card sample made a difference, this is the full toolkit behind it.
A note on approach
Don't overhaul your language overnight — that's exhausting for you both. Pick just 2 or 3 cards to focus on each week. Notice your own reactions as you go; creating psychological flexibility for yourself is the first step in modelling it for your child. Let the environment do the heavy lifting rather than direct instruction. And remember, a "no" is always valid — if a swap doesn't land, prioritise safety and connection, and try again when everyone's nervous system is regulated.
