In File 006 — The Backpack, learners explore the fascinating world of texture by transforming a simple backpack illustration into a detailed piece of artwork.

From woven fabric and breathable mesh to smooth zips and sturdy straps, every surface presents a new artistic challenge!

THE CREATIVE CHALLENGE

Learners investigate how different pencil marks can represent:

• Fabric: Using hatching, cross-hatching and repeated marks to suggest woven material.
• Mesh: Creating small, repeated patterns to represent the backpack's breathable sections.
• Zips: Experimenting with fine lines, controlled shading and small details to create a metallic appearance.
• Straps: Using contour lines, stitching details and shading to show thickness and texture.

Learners are encouraged to experiment with six mark-making techniques:

Hatching • Cross-hatching • Stippling • Scribbling • Contour Lines • Repeated Patterns
