Help students reason from cell evidence and explain how cell parts work together with a two-page five-step teacher model at the center of this 32-page printable Microbiome topic review.

THE FIVE-STEP TEACHER WORKED EXAMPLE

Model Read, Annotate, Find evidence, Analyze, and Eliminate and justify. Teacher prompts show what to say and mark, how to connect known-source records to a claim, and how to eliminate each distractor. A guided transfer uses plant-tissue evidence before independent practice.

THREE REVIEW LESSONS BEFORE TEST PREP

Six quick checks help teachers check understanding before test prep to improve student success. Illustrated lessons address evidence of cells, one-cell organisms versus multicellular tissue, whole-cell functions and microbiomes as communities. Models are clearly labeled illustrations rather than microscope photographs.

THREE CONNECTED HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES

1. Investigate Prepared Slide Evidence: compare teacher-approved commercially prepared fixed yeast, onion and salt-crystal slides. Includes source/magnification records, observations, questions and limitations. Requires school microscope/slides and teacher supervision. A supplied paper evidence alternative is included; it does not claim students conducted a microscope investigation.

2. Build and Revise a Whole Cell Model: use supplied part/role cards, explain membrane and internal-part contributions, revise the model, and compare a photosynthetic plant-cell example.

3. Build a Microbiome Community Model: use 12 paper symbols to distinguish organisms from communities and changes in composition from changes in total count. This is a representative educational model, not patient data or a medical simulation.

Activities include preparation/materials, student directions, teacher reasoning, recording opportunities, model limits and connections to the practice questions. Allow about 20-30 minutes for microscopy, 20-25 minutes for the cell model and 15-20 minutes for the community model, plus preparation/cleanup.

STANDARDS AND CURRICULUM CONNECTION

Targets Louisiana 6-MS-LS1-1 and 6-MS-LS1-2, corresponding to NGSS MS-LS1-1 and MS-LS1-2. These are the focal standards in LDOE's Grade 6 Amplify Microbiome guidance. This independently created topic review is not an official Amplify product or its complete launch curriculum. It contains no copied Amplify lessons or official test questions.

Louisiana standards/crosswalk and July 2026 Grade 6 assessment guide checked October 26, 2026. Focus is evidence and whole-cell function, not detailed biochemistry, diagnosis, treatment or a broader human-body-system course.

MATERIALS AND USE

Paper, pencils, tape/counters, safe cutting supplies; for actual microscopy, a school microscope and commercially prepared fixed slides with source labels, appropriate equipment and teacher preparation. No live culturing, body sampling, pond-water collection, food preparation or medical treatment is required. Use selected paper lessons/models for substitutes with teacher directions supplied. Conduct microscope work only under trained supervision following school rules.
