Ceramics Art Lesson Clay Doodle Pinch Pots Artwork Sculpture Ceramic Art Project
In this Zen Doodle Pinch Pot lesson, students build a pinch pot and carve their own Zen Doodle patterns into the clay. Along the way they explore the Element of Art: Line, try subtractive sculpture techniques and learn about texture and design. It works whether you are introducing clay for the first time or looking for a new ceramics project.
Pinch pots are one of the oldest and most versatile ceramic forms. They can be functional drinking cups, small bowls or vases, or purely decorative pieces, which makes them a good introduction to pottery. Students use the pinching method to build a strong vessel, and practice their Zen Doodle designs on paper before carving them into the clay.
WHAT TEACHERS ARE SAYING
★★★★ “My students were excited about using clay. The step by step resources on how to make a pinch pot made it easy for me and my students to follow. I also really appreciate the premade zentangle handout. Many of my students like to jump right into the project after understanding what to do, and that resource made it possible.” Antoinette H.

HOW TO USE IT
Check the lesson plan for what to do and gather the materials in advance: clay, stain or glaze, clay tools for carving, sponges, water, clay boards for storage, and pencils for notes and pattern doodles. Photocopy the step-by-step handouts (double-sided), rubrics and Zen Doodle pattern reference sheets for your class. You may want to make a sample yourself first so you are ready to help students.
Print the example artwork in color to show students what they are making before the lesson. That is your hook. Then project the PDF, show it under a document camera, or use it as your own guide while you demonstrate. Every step has both a visual and a written description, so it is easy to follow.
