Indian Tamils are one of the oldest continuous ethnolinguistic populations in South Asia, centered primarily in the modern Indian state of Tamil Nadu and parts of Sri Lanka. They speak Tamil, one of the longest continuously attested languages in the world, with a literary tradition dating back over 2,000 years to the Sangam period, known as the Golden Age of Tamilakam. Early Tamil society is described in Sangam poetry, which portrays a complex culture of warrior chiefs, pastoralists, agriculturalists, and maritime traders.

Historically, Tamil civilization was dominated by three major dynasties known as the “Tamil Triad”: the Chola dynasty, Chera dynasty, and Pandya dynasty. The Cholas, especially under rulers like Rajaraja Chola First and Rajendra Chola First, built one of the most powerful maritime empires in Indian history, extending influence across Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia. The Pandyas were known for their patronage of Tamil literature and control over pearl fisheries, while the Cheras dominated trade routes along the western coast, connecting India to the Roman Empire and the Middle East. These kingdoms fostered monumental temple architecture, such as the Brihadisvara Temple, and contributed to the spread of Tamil culture abroad.

Tamils speak a language belonging to the Dravidian languages, a family that includes Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. These languages are structurally distinct from the Indo-European languages of North India like Hindi or Sanskrit, featuring agglutinative grammar and deep historical roots in the subcontinent. The origins of Dravidian languages remain debated. One hypothesis, often called the “Zagrosian” or “Elamo-Dravidian” theory, proposes a connection between Dravidian languages and ancient populations from the Zagros Mountains region of western Iran, linked to early Neolithic farmers who migrated into South Asia. This theory draws on linguistic parallels and genetic signals of Iranian-related ancestry in South Indians.

For this video, I gathered the raw genome of an Indian Tamil from a 2021 study into the genetics of cataracts. The sample I am featuring in this video is from the experimental group, meaning she has cataracts.
