Tattooing has been practiced by humans for a very long time, according to historical records and archaeological sites. The oldest evidence of tattoo art dates back to 5000 BCE, and the practice continues to hold meaning for many cultures around the world. The oldest physical proof of tattoos has been found on an ancient mummy from the Alps, called Ötzi. Tools that appear to have been crafted specifically for creating tattoos have been found in prehistoric sites around France, Portugal, and Scandinavia, and these tools are no less than 12,000 years old. Across time and cultures, tattoos have many different forms and meanings.

In ancient Egypt, tattoos appear to have been used to relieve painful health problems like chronic pelvic peritonitis (inflammation of the membrane lining the abdominal cavity) . It is also believed that many ancient cultures, like in Egypt and India, used tattoos as a form of healing and religious worship. But it has also been speculated that tattoos were also used to denote social status or mark someone for punishment. In ancient Greece and Rome, tattoos were used mainly on the outcasts of society, such as criminals, prisoners of war, and slaves, who would be branded with their status.

The art of tattooing became widespread throughout Europe, especially among sailors, in the 19th century. Tattooing was an expensive and painful process and by the late 1880s had become a mark of wealth for the crowned heads of Europe[. Throughout the 20th century, popular attitudes toward tattoos have changed, and they have become more widely accepted as a form of self-expression and art.
