Carolyn's Tenor (modern setting)
Some years ago, Carolyn Jean Smith, a member of the Quilisma Consort, received as a gift a copy of a Medieval chant manuscript.
When she commissioned a piece for the ensemble, I used the notes of this chant as the basis for Carolyn's Tenor, a series of compositions for recorder trio that explore a variety of counterpoint techniques.
This selection, while distinctly modern in sound, hints at the 14th century ars subtilior style with its elaborate rhythmic patterns (such as four-against-three ratios).
Also included is the version based upon fifth species Renaissance rhythm theory. Both versions are include text and can be performed by vocalists.
