Assigned Pooling
Assigned pooling patterns are a fun and easy way to add pops of color and texture to your knitting! These patterns designate stitch types to the color of the yarn you are currently working with, so the instructions are less rigid than other patterns, and more like guidelines.
Yarn Recommendations
The best yarn for this pattern will consist of 3/4 background color and 1/4 accent color, and I recommend you select yarns with very strong contrasts between background and accent colors. (Using lower-contrast colors will mean your textured stitches don't show up very well.) I've included images of examples of assigned pooling yarn in the listing photos. You can see the list of those colorways and websites below, as well as a note on ethical purchasing.
This pattern includes:
• photo AND video tutorials
• clickable tick boxes to help track your progress through the pattern
• instructions for standard and relaxed fit
• instructions for single brim and double brim
• tips for making your beanie look its best
Difficulty: Beginner to advanced beginner
Materials for DK version:
• 160-180 yards assigned pooling yarn in DK weight
• 16" circular knitting needles, US 3 & 5 (3.25 mm & 3.75 mm) or sizes that match gauge*
• double pointed needles in larger needle size
• sharp scissors
• tapestry or yarn needle
• recommended: stitch marker
Materials for Worsted version:
• 180-200 yards assigned pooling yarn in worsted weight
• 16" circular knitting needles, US 4 & 6 (3.5 mm & 4.0 mm) or sizes that match gauge*
• double pointed needles in larger needle size
• sharp scissors
• tapestry or yarn needle
• recommended: stitch marker
*NOTE: I tend to knit ever-so-slightly looser than average. You may need to select a different needle size for your hat to fit well.
A note on ethical purchasing:
One very important thing to consider before purchasing the yarn for this project is that this type of yarn is always hand-dyed, and cannot be replicated by machine. Some big box craft stores are beginning to carry hand-dyed yarn, and even some assigned pooling yarn, which is fine, so long as the price corresponds with labor plus retail markup. What is concerning is that there are big box stores carrying this hand-dyed yarn at bargain prices, which is a possible indicator of sweatshop conditions. I'm always in support of buying within your budget (and I am no stranger to inexpensive yarn), but with products that are handmade, being selective with where we spend our money, and what is perpetuated by our purchases, is vital.
