Baroque Horror Vacui
Baroque art is a Western style of art and architecture that flourished from the early 17th century until the mid-18th century. It followed Renaissance art and Mannerism and preceded the Rococo. The term "Baroque" is derived from the Portuguese ‘barocco’ meaning ‘irregular pearl or stone’. The earliest manifestations of Baroque art occurred in Italy, while in some regions, notably Germany and colonial South America, certain culminating achievements of Baroque did not occur until the 18th century. Baroque art and architecture stressed theatrical atmosphere, dynamic flourishes, and myriad colors and textures. The defining characteristics of the Baroque style were: real or implied movement, an attempt to represent infinity, an emphasis on light and its effects, and a focus on the theatrical. A number of techniques were introduced, or further developed, by Baroque artists to accomplish these effects including quadro riportato, frescos that incorporated quadrature, and trompe l'oeil techniques. Famous Baroque artists include Caravaggio, Peter Paul Rubens, Artemisia Gentileschi, Diego Velázquez, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
