Finding the Names, Vol. One, Installment 15 — New Orleans Inward Manifests, 1822 (Continued)
Installment 15 of Finding the Names, Volume One — 1,169 more entries transcribed name by name from the original New Orleans ship manifests at the National Archives (Microfilm M1895, Roll 2, images 481–600). 314 pages, large print — the largest installment yet. FREE — please share it so families can find their people.
The lead story: two free people sailed south to stay with the spouses slavery held. On the ship Balloon's Baltimore certificate, the Collector himself recorded that Samuel Berry, 53, and Mary Myers, 19 — free persons of colour, produced and identified by the Collector — were accompanying the vessel "with their wife & husband," who were among the enslaved people aboard. The Balloon's passage was a hard one: Andrew, 15, Hannah, 40, and one of the infants aboard died on the way.
Also in these pages: the brig Galigo's 151, whose New Orleans inspection turned into a pencilled war on the manifest — substitutes stopped at the wharf, a man named Billy marked "Not found," two infants lost, a child born, and no two officials ever agreeing on the count; a free New Orleans family's sworn declaration that let them take their servant Rozalie and her baby to Cuba and legally bring them back; the Hollon's dead infant — one of two babies on the list, and the papers never say which; three people taken off the Emigrant after she sailed and a man named Frank put aboard in their place; and Sam, a Black sailor from New Haven, travelling as a passenger on a slave manifest.
Counting this installment, the Finding the Names project has recovered 7,980 entries from the New Orleans manifests, every one free. The companion guide and the Complete Set (Installments 1–15 in one download) are also free in this store.
