Create a wearable flag with the Wear It With Pride Top! It’s about the joy for people living their best lives and virtual hugs for people stuck in unsupportive situations. Validation that your identity is exactly as you describe it and it’s okay if that identity changes over time or doesn’t fit into any neat boxes. Reassurance that whether you’re flying the flag publicly or keeping it to yourself, it doesn’t change the magic that makes you who you are.

The world can feel so overwhelming. My hope is that however you’re feeling, the project gives you a way to ground yourself - the calm of the crocheting itself, and the reassurance that out there in the big wide internet, there are people who support you exactly as you are.

Worked as a basic rectangle with minimal seaming, the top is loose fitting and lightweight, and can be styled in any number of ways. The pattern includes three lengths and nine bust sizes, notes for making it match your flag, and loads of customization options.

Gauge

One repeat measures approximately 1.25”/3cm wide by 3”/7.5cm high unblocked, which blocks out to 1.75”/4.5cm wide by 4.5”/11.5cm high. To create a swatch for the lace, work a swatch of the stitch pattern, wash and block as you would the final top, and then measure the center repeat(s).

Be sure to check gauge! Gauge swatch is worked flat and measurements are taken after blocking. Do not stretch the fabric when checking gauge. If your gauge is off by a bit, you may be able to block to size - just be sure to have a buffer of extra yardage. Gauge may vary based on how you block. Differences in gauge will change the finished size and will also impact the yardage required. If you don’t want to match gauge, you can work the top to size. However, lace grows significantly with blocking, so I still recommend swatching, blocking, and customizing measurements based on your blocked gauge.

Yarn, Yardage, and Colors

The stitch pattern works well in anything from a lace to an aran weight, but I recommend sticking to lace or fingering weight so the repeats don’t end up too large. The stitch pattern shows up well with any color style from variegated to speckled to gradient. It’s specifically designed to work with flag colors, but can also be worked in one color throughout or a fade-style color progression. The laciness of the pattern means it doesn’t use very much yardage, so it’s great for using up partial skeins.

Yardage per size given for crop version. The hip length top takes approximately 1.8 times, and the duster takes approximately 2.6 times, the listed yardage.

The top is designed to work with any flag at any size. Since the top is a basic rectangle, each repeat uses approximately the same amount of yarn. Approximately 20% of the listed yardage is needed for the first row. Take the remainder of the total yardage listed in the materials section and divide it evenly for each stripe.

Size

This is a #sizeinclusive pattern. There are three cross back sizes, built out to a total of nine bust sizes. Choose a size that measures approximately 0.5-2”/1-5cm larger than your cross back measurement with a top width that is 8-12”/20-30cm larger than your chest circumference. If your cross back and top width measurements are from two different sizes, choose a size based on the cross back and add/remove sts from the front sections using the size adjustment instructions.

For a crop top, the total length is 14 (16) (16)”/ 36 (41) (41) cm. For a top that hits at the hip, the total length is 25.25 (28) (28)”/ 64 (71) (71) cm. For a duster that hits at the knees, the total length is 32 (34.25) (34.25)”/ 81 (87) (87) cm

Skills Required

The pattern is designed to be an excellent first garment project - it’s shapeless and forgiving and a basic rectangle that takes no special skills. The pattern uses dc, sc, ch sts. Counting rows and stitches, Working into the ch-space, Working flat, Mattress stitch, Working to stitch markers

Construction

The top is a basic rectangle worked from the bottom up. It starts with flat rows, and then the shoulder section is worked in three panels directly from the body of the top. The shoulders are then seamed together.

Modifications and Adjustments

Notes are included for adjusting the following: making the top longer/shorter; making the fronts wider/narrower/asymmetrical; making the back wider/narrower; adjusting the size and depth of the armholes; adjusting the color stripes to match any flag; working to any gauge; making the shoulder seam longer/shorter

Overview of the Finished Object

The Wear It With Pride Top is lacy and oversized. It features a simple lace repeat that repeats through the entire top. It’s shapeless - a basic rectangle with some minimal seaming to create armholes.
