A set of more than 1,000 German-English flashcards made by me for you!

Each term has an example sentence in German, and an audio recording of me reading that sentence aloud. The back side of each card has the term and the example sentence translated into English.

Each noun has the gender and the plural form, and each verb has the four major conjugations listed (infinitive, present, präteritum, and perfekt).

The pack is split up into 9 modules of increasing difficulty. The terms were chosen from frequency-ordered lists of German words. This means you will learn the most common, essential words first, as well as several essential phrases for your first trip to a German-speaking country.

This flashcard pack requires you to download the (free, open-source) flashcard software Anki. Anki is FREE on Windows, Mac, and Android. Basic instructions on how to download and set up Anki are included in the ReadMe file, as well as links to helpful Youtube tutorials.

You will get a ZIP (39MB) file

Thoughtfully Designed Flashcards

I rarely leave reviews, but I really wanted to give Sammy credit where it was due here. These are truly such well-designed flashcards. I know it's easy to find free Anki cards online, but you cannot find this level of intentionality. Sammy uses everyday useable sentences/phrases as examples, and she deliberately uses other words in the flashcard deck within the examples. That way, you're familiarizing yourself with words multiple ways. The audio is her own voice, which may not sound important, but generated audio often does not correctly emphasize syllables or parts of a sentence like a human would in real life. Plus, if you're working on your accent, it's so easy to repeat after her and be confident you're on the right track. Are there some typos? Sure. Every textbook you've ever read has errata, and Anki cards are significantly easier to update when errors are caught. I haven't found anything too material to the user's learning.

For context, I do not think I am the target audience. I have pretty good German already (I haven't taken an actual test because I have no reason to, but I got 29/30 on that free online Goethe placement test, so make of that what you will). I'd love to see another few rounds of these cards that bump things up closer to my level! While most of these cards are below the level I generally operate at, I still get nervous about sounding silly speaking, and having the basics so automated I don't need to use my brain gives me so much more confidence.

A Fantastic Toolset for Starting From Scratch

As someone who is trying to learn German basically from scratch, these flash cards are proving really useful for learning a lot of new vocabulary quickly whilst also having to actively recall them (which really helps keep things stick). I would highly recommend using these flash cards and even making the extra effort to learn what all of the words in each of the flash cards mean. Between those and googling the difference between certain words (e.g. machen vs tun and wissen vs kennen) you can really learn a lot!
