I think this is the best solo album that Monk ever recorded. There are several reasons for my love for this album:
- This is the first Monk album that I really listenned to as a teenager (along with Underground). I still believe that these two albums are a great entry point to Monk's music.
- I love what he plays with his left hand on these recordings. It's kinda simple: mostly single notes (roots, thirds and 7ths), or a few chords with precisely chosen notes, but it all comes together because of the crazy swing he puts into each note. Over time he settled for playing stride (it's obvious on the 1965 Solo Monk). Don't get me wrong, I love stride, but i think his playing is more interesting on Paris Solo Piano.
- All the tunes recorded here are absolute classics, with only one standard (obvioulsy Smoke Gets In Your Eyes).
