Description:

This theme examines Hadith as a historically transmitted, documented, compiled, criticised, preserved and continuously studied body of knowledge. It covers oral and written transmission, early documentation, the emergence and development of isnād-based transmission, compilation of Hadith collections, major compilers and scholarly works, development of Hadith sciences, narrator-biographical literature, geographical and intellectual transmission networks, scholarly institutions and schools, manuscript traditions, textual circulation, reception history and the evolution of Hadith criticism. Historical investigation should treat Hadith transmission as a layered process connecting narrators, texts, places, periods, collections and scholarly judgments rather than as a simple linear chronology. The literature shows that isnād functioned as a historical citation system recording transmission from one person to another and became deeply embedded in Islamic scholarly practice; scholars also developed biographical dictionaries and evaluations of transmitters to investigate where and when reports circulated and whether they could be attributed to their reported sources. Learning-to-Identify-Narrators-… Modern computational research extends these historical possibilities through narrator identification, social-network analysis, graph databases and large structured datasets. For example, the Multi-IsnadSet represents Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim transmission through thousands of narrator nodes and tens of thousands of sanad–Hadith relationships, while Sanadset 650K extracts narrator-chain information from hundreds of historical Arabic books.
