The Anxiety to Agency Kit
Help your child take small brave steps — with practical tools you can use together
Digital download | For parents of primary-school children aged approximately 5–12
“I can’t go.”
Whether it’s a party, a class presentation or school camp, your child’s worry can quickly become your worry too. You want to help, but knowing when to comfort, when to step back and what to say next isn’t always easy.
The Anxiety to Agency Kit gives you a practical place to start.
Created by parenting educator and author Michael Grose, co-author of Anxious Kids, this resource helps you understand the pattern between your child’s worry and your response, teach useful coping tools and plan manageable steps towards participation.
Anxiety may never disappear completely, but it can fade into the background as children understand it and develop tools to manage it. The aim is to help your child get on with the things that matter, with the support they need.
A clear approach for worried moments
Recognise the anxiety dance. Notice when reassurance and taking over become a familiar pattern, and learn how to offer support that helps your child participate.
Respond with SOBER. Stop, Observe, Breathe, Expand and Respond. Use this simple pause to steady yourself and choose a helpful next move.
Teach tools and build small steps. Help your child check in with their feelings, breathe comfortably, notice the present, use movement and step back from worried thoughts. Then choose a manageable challenge to practise together.
