One of the definitive books for developing the low register of the tuba. Phil Snedecor’s Low Etudes for Tuba contains 19 studies that demand proper control, dexterity and — most importantly — musical playing in a range that we often only practise through exercises and long notes.

I absolutely love this book. It’s fun to play, rewarding to work on and very easy to get stuck into. The low register is treated as music rather than just an exercise in getting low notes to speak, so you’re developing airflow, articulation, flexibility and clarity whilst still shaping phrases and making proper musical decisions. If improving your low playing is a priority, this would be one of my first recommendations.

If you want to take things even lower, try Snedecor’s Low(er) Etudes for Tuba, which focuses on the ultra-low register and is also available in the shop.

For euphonium and other treble-clef players, have a look at Euph’Tudes — Snedecor’s collection written specifically for euphonium, but can be used by Eb & Bb Bass players also.
