Because of the popularity of today’s rapture centered theology, Jesus’ prophecy on the Mount of Olives has been assigned a status of “unfulfilled.” The assumption is that Jesus was talking about the end of the “world” in these chapters, even though the text addresses specifically, the end of “the age.” So, an important question becomes; “What did Jesus mean by the end and the age?”

This study takes the approach that Jesus’ intended time frame for the fulfillment of his prophecy was to be within what he calls “this generation” meaning literally what he states in Matthew 24:34. Thus, his expectation was not left completely unfulfilled, but accomplished—by means of the events of AD 70—when he obviously expected it to be fulfilled. There are certainly elements of any biblical prophecy that may be more or less fully understood by God’s people in later times than as before. But the actual fulfillment of what is predicted must be apparent within a reasonable time frame of its utterance so that it can be judged “accurate” or “false” by those for whom the prophecy was intended.
