In the desolate, jointly operated U.S.–Russian Arctic outpost known as Outpost Echo (nicknamed “The Black Spot”), CIA agent Avery Quinn is sent on a classified science-liaison mission only to discover that her new Russian counterpart is Mikhail Vetrov—the former KGB operative who four years earlier betrayed her in Berlin, stole sensitive intelligence, and vanished, leaving her for dead.

The syndicate has secretly reactivated Firewatch, an obsolete Soviet nuclear doomsday failsafe, and is using Echo’s seismic and communication arrays to spoof missile launches and manufacture a false-flag crisis that will trick the United States and Russia into mutual annihilation.

As Avery and Mikhail race against a 60-hour countdown, they crawl through frozen vents, sabotage ancient Soviet hardware, and confront Lieutenant Grant, an American officer revealed to be the syndicate’s inside man. They manage to disable the immediate threat and send an emergency stand-down through a forgotten Cold War relay, narrowly averting World War III.

But stopping the launch is only the beginning.

In the weeks and months that follow, Avery and Mikhail—now fugitives from their own agencies—go off-grid together and discover that Echo was never the real objective. It was a test. After destroying Outpost Echo for good and erasing the syndicate’s Arctic server farm, Avery and Mikhail finally walk away—burned, hunted, but alive and together. They settle into an anonymous life on a quiet Portuguese coast, trying to convince themselves the war is over.
