Two Storms - One City
Forty years separate two names that became permanently attached to New Orleans: Betsy and Katrina. Hurricane Betsy struck southeastern Louisiana on September 9, 1965. Hurricane Katrina returned catastrophe to the region on August 29, 2005. Both storms entered Louisiana during the season traditionally identified with Virgo.
Two Storms, One City keeps the comparison intentionally focused. It follows the general history of Betsy and Katrina, the flooding each storm brought to New Orleans, the forty-year interval between them, and the Virgo calendar pattern surrounding their Louisiana landfalls. The book distinguishes documented meteorology from symbolic interpretation, allowing the historical facts and the observed patterns to stand beside one another without confusing one for the other.
