Anne Bishop is an American writer majoring in fantasy. She has won the Crawford Award. Her most reputed book is The Black Jewels. She is the champion of the William L. Crawford Memorial Fantasy Award. She was born in 1955 and currently lives in New York. She began her occupation by producing short stories. Her stories have been interpreted into various languages like Polish, Portuguese, Dutch, German, French and Czech. Other than writing dark dreamy stories, her other hobbies include farming, reading and listening to music. She enjoys playing folk on the drummed dulcimer. She is a brave proofreader, looking for any dreaded error. Anne Bishop’s books are accessible as downloadable audiobooks. Others can be found on CD’s or cassettes for documents. All her books are accessible in electronic formats.

She mainly gets her ideas from all over including visual illustrations, music, legends, myths, the past and psychology. An example is the Tir Alainn world where her first ideas came from a cloud configuration she observed years ago on the home from a journey. Euphemera started with a psychological notion that a person’s outside world is an indication of the person’s inside world. She proceeded by taking a scenario and wondering how people would survive in a place where there is light and yet in their hearts it is full of darkness. Anne’s writing schedule is five to seven hours daily, five days on a weekly basis. When she starts a new book, she first of all contemplates and fantasizes. Then characters and locations start to appear. She then jots down rough notes. When she begins outlining, she will commence at the beginning and then towards the end. The storyline then comes by itself fully.

The Black Jewels is a series of dark fantasy novels and short stories. The first three books were originally published individually and then together as a trilogy in a single omnibus collection. The series takes place in a world where those born with dark power/magic rule in a deeply matriarchal society.

The first volume of the original trilogy, and first novel set in the Black Jewels universe, Daughter of the Blood, was published in March 1998. Heir to the Shadows and Queen of the Darkness, published in April 1999 and January 2000, completed the trilogy. An omnibus edition was released in 2003. Also in 2000, Bishop released her first stand-alone novel for the Black Jewels universe, The Invisible Ring. Taking place prior to the trilogy itself, readers were able to pick up the novel either before or after reading the trilogy, though Bishop recommends reading it after. In 2005, Bishop then released the book of four short stories known as Dreams Made Flesh. Once again, this collection of short stories allowed a reader to taste the rich universe Bishop had created without needing to read the core trilogy. Although, reading the trilogy added to the depth of the individual short stories and vice versa. 2008 brought about another stand-alone novel, Tangled Webs. Then in 2009, Bishop's novel The Shadow Queen was published and here she did something a little different. Unlike her prior releases, this novel was related to characters and events that occurred during another of her stand-alone novels, The Invisible Ring as well as the events of the original trilogy. Shalador's Lady, released in 2010, is the sequel to "The Shadow Queen" and in March 2011, Twilight's Dawn hit the shelves. It contains four more short stories which help to answer some questions readers had about different parts of the universe/story. Two short stories, "By the Time the Witchblood Blooms" and "The Price" were originally published (March 2000 and October 2004 respectively) in anthologies of short stories from a variety of authors. "By the Time the Witchblood Blooms" can also be found at the end of Tangled Webs.
