I bought the hype again.

Last year I paid good money for a tool that had a slick website, a glowing demo, and a founder who looked like he personally invented the internet.

I set it up. I used it for 60 days. It did almost nothing it promised.

That wasn't the first time. It wasn't even the fifth time.

I've bought CRMs that crashed on day three. AI tools that confidently made things up like a toddler explaining how airplanes work. Design platforms that took four hours to do what I needed done in four minutes. One tool sent me a "setup complete" email and then never did anything again. Just silence. Like it entered witness protection.

The money adds up fast. The frustration adds up faster.

So I started writing it all down.

Every tool I bought for my publishing business got its own honest entry. What it cost. What it actually did. Whether I'd buy it again. The flops got documented too — maybe especially the flops — because that's where the real lessons are.

No sponsored results. No affiliate padding. Just what happened when a real person ran a real business with the thing.

That became The Dirt Road Tool Directory.

It's basically the list I wish someone had handed me three years ago before I lit a few hundred dollars on fire. If you're a solopreneur or side-hustler who's tired of finding out a tool is broken on your own dime, it's worth a look.
