ATCHAFALAYA BAY
Track 5 from Smokin’ Joe Cotton, The Blues'll Never Be The Same.
“When I was a child, mama used to tell us not to go to the bayou. Mama used to say that the Black Mambo woman would steal the souls of all good children. I didn't believe, but I ain't goin' to the bay.”
Atchafalaya Bay takes Joe back to another memory from his early childhood in Louisiana.
Like generations of parents before her, Joe’s mother knows that sometimes the best way to keep young children away from a dangerous place is to give them a story they will remember.
For Joe and his siblings, that warning comes through the legend of the Black Mambo woman — a mysterious figure said to live deep in the swamps, with cat-like eyes, speaking with spirits and waiting for children foolish enough to wander where they have been told not to go.
Behind the frightening childhood tale is a much simpler message from a mother protecting her children:
Stay out of the swamps.
Years later, as Joe travels south in search of his roots, the old story returns to him — another fragment of childhood carried with him long after he left Louisiana.
Smokin’ Joe Cotton is a work of historical musical fiction. Its characters and narrative are fictional, set against real periods of migration, segregation and cultural change. The album draws inspiration from African American blues and gospel traditions and encounters spiritual beliefs and traditions beyond Joe’s own musical journey. The Rock and Roll Rewind Project does not attempt to speak for those lived experiences. Through original music and storytelling, the project seeks to acknowledge, celebrate and explore the people, creativity and cultural influences behind the music.
