Music Emergency Sub Plans - 5 Days No Prep for the Non-Music Substitute
Five full days of substitute-ready music in one no-prep download, built for the problem that makes a music absence hard: the covering adult is almost never a musician, there is usually only one music teacher in the building so there is nobody down the hall to ask, and a room full of instruments is the last thing a substitute should be asked to supervise. Nothing here asks them to teach music, to read notation, to carry a tune, or to hand out a single instrument. The five days run the foundations of a general music course in order, so this is a week of coursework rather than a folder of time-fillers. Pencil and paper is the entire supply list, and no speaker, device or sound system is needed on any day. You come back to a complete set of answer keys and a class that kept working.
WHAT'S INCLUDED
- Sub & Teacher Notes run sheet (what to hand out each day, what to print, and why the substitute does not need to grade anything)
- 5 days of student work, two pages per day (64 questions total)
- 5 original nonfiction readings written for this packet, one per day
- 5 complete answer keys, one per day
- Single 17-page PDF: run sheet and student pages first (pages 1-11), an "Answer Keys" divider on page 12, then the keys (pages 13-17) -- print pages 1-11 to hand out the whole week without printing the keys
- PDF bookmarks for one-click navigation by day
- US Letter, low-ink, two-sided printable
WHY A SUBSTITUTE CAN ACTUALLY RUN THIS
- Every question is answered by the reading on the same handout, so a stuck student re-reads the passage instead of asking the sub a subject question
- Every second page checks itself -- answers pair off, spell out a phrase, or fall into a sequence, so a wrong answer is caught by the student, not adjudicated by the sub
- Every day has an "if you finish early" challenge, so nobody runs out of work
- No device, textbook, login, or internet needed
THE 5 DAYS
1. The Elements of Music -- rhythm, melody, harmony, timbre, dynamics and form — the materials every piece is built from (14 questions, answer match)
2. Reading Music on Paper -- the staff, clefs, note and rest values, time signatures and key signatures — no instrument needed (12 questions, word decoder)
3. Instrument Families and Ensembles -- how instruments actually make sound, and how groups of them are organized (14 questions, answer match)
4. Style Periods in Western Music -- six eras, what changed in each, and why the dates are approximate — a listening-free reading (12 questions, sequence path)
5. Music in the World Today -- how the money works, what the jobs actually are, and what music does outside a concert hall (12 questions, word decoder)
Each day stands alone, so they can run in any order or be pulled one at a time.
PERFECT FOR
- Emergency and planned substitute days in Music (grades 6-12)
- Planned absences, professional development days, and testing weeks when you are pulled to proctor
- Review before a test, the first week of school, or the day before a break
- Homeschool families working through Music
STANDARDS TOUCHED
Music content across the elements, notation, instruments and ensembles, the style periods, and music in the world today — five original readings, each with comprehension questions. CCSS ELA/Literacy: RI.6.1, RI.7.1 and RI.9-10.1 on the readings and questions, RI.6.4 on the vocabulary items, and RST.6-8.4 and RST.9-10.4 on the Day 2 and Day 3 technical vocabulary. No National Core Arts Standards codes are claimed: this is a reading-and-writing packet a non-musician substitute can run, not a performing or composing task. Nothing is listed that the content does not actually do.
