Óðinn: Inspiration, Mystery, and Magic
“He gives victory to some,
Money to others,
eloquence to many,
and common sense to all.
He gives fair winds to sailors,
word-skill to poets,
he gives valor to many men.”
-Hyndluljóð 3
Of the many Old Norse/Germanic gods, few have attracted the same amount of attention, passion, and controversy as Óðinn. Yet for all of the attention lavished on this god of many names and masks, he retains his sense of mystery. He is fury and passion, gelding and father, fertility god and god of the dead. He is a wandering magician, yet sits with poets and kings. A charm-spitting healer and seiðmaðr, and an ergi-affected giver of “manliness”, word-skill, and önd.
He is all of these things and more.
“I have never been known by just one name since I first walked among men.”
- Grímnismál 48
