This Elements of Art: Texture Unit teaches upper elementary and middle school students about real and implied texture, mark-making and mixed media. Students learn through instruction, visual presentations and art history, then complete three art projects, from texture rubbings to Basquiat-inspired layering.

It is designed for general education teachers, art classrooms, homeschooling and sub plans. Step-by-step slides, lesson plans, rubrics, bulletin board signs and printable handouts are all included, so you don't have to build the unit from scratch.

WHAT TEACHERS ARE SAYING

★★★★ “This resource helped students truly understand the difference between real and implied texture in a hands-on and memorable way. The projects were thoughtfully scaffolded and easy to follow, while still allowing students to develop their own artistic voice and creativity.” Jennifer W.

HOW TO USE IT

Use the video or slide presentation to introduce texture, then move into the mini challenge and the art project tutorials so students explore texture through visual and tactile techniques. Project the slides or use them as your teacher guide, and prep materials and printables before class.

Teach it as a full unit or choose standalone projects. It works for in-person art instruction, homeschool visual art lessons, substitute or emergency art plans and distance learning support.
