About this song:
Even If was written days after Renee Macklin Good's murder, and days before Alex Pretti's murder. Early drafts of the lyrics used words like "they," "you," and "them," but it felt more healthy to zoom out and consider how these horrific events fit into the ongoing struggle for liberation from empire's violent machinations. This story is told repeatedly in scripture, and has borne itself out again and again throughout human history. The goal with this prayer for gentleness is not to skip to a happy ending by means of cheap grace, but to do the hard work of choosing nonviolence even when we feel increasingly unsure of how to do so.
