Handwriting and Structure: Weeks 1–8 — Fiction Unit

Handwriting and Structure is an eight-week foundational writing resource designed for early-elementary students who need support with handwriting, grammar, sentence construction, and written expression.

I created this resource after noticing that many students who struggled with handwriting also struggled to form complete sentences and apply basic grammar skills. Rather than teaching those areas separately, this unit combines them in one connected five-day routine.

Each week includes four printable, full-color landscape pages:

• Days 1 and 2: Students trace and copy a five-sentence fiction story while learning a weekly grammar skill.
• Day 3: Sentence Surgery challenges students to put scrambled words in the correct order and write a complete sentence using the grammar focus.
• Day 4: Students respond to a story-connected writing prompt using traceable sentence stems.
• Day 5: A handwriting assessment measures letter formation, alignment, spacing, legibility, capitalization, punctuation, and sentence completeness.
