A Gentle Path to Reading

A Complete Early Language Arts Curriculum for Ages 3–8 | By Hearthold Homeschool

Your child doesn't need to be pushed into reading. They need to be invited.

So many children arrive at reading through pressure — timed drills, worksheets, flash cards — and learn to associate books with effort before they've ever known the joy of them.

A Gentle Path to Reading takes a different road.

Built on Charlotte Mason's living education philosophy and a structured multisensory phonics sequence, this curriculum honors the way children actually learn: through beauty, repetition, and delight. No rushing. No forcing. Just a steady, joyful unfolding — at your child's pace, in your home.

What's Inside

One complete curriculum guide — all 4 stages in a single PDF, designed to grow with your child from age 3 through 8.

4 Stages · 20 Lessons · 100+ Living Book Recommendations

Every lesson follows the same gentle multisensory sequence:

👁 See it — observe the letter or pattern

👂 Hear it — listen to the sound

✋ Air Write — trace it in the air

🏖 Sand Write — feel it in the sand

✏️ Paper Write — write it on the page

Your child doesn't just memorize — they know the letter in their body, their ear, and their hand. That's the difference between a child who can recite and a child who can truly read.

The Four Stages

Stage 1 · Ages 3–5 · Delighting in Language

Before any formal instruction, we cultivate a love of language itself. Through read-alouds, nursery rhymes, nature walks, and songs, your child absorbs the rhythms and sounds of beautiful English — building the invisible foundation all future reading rests upon.

5 lessons · 22 living book recommendations

Stage 2 · Ages 4–6 · Seeing, Hearing, Feeling Letter Sounds

We learn the sounds of letters — not just their names — through the full multisensory sequence. Each letter is gently mastered before the next is introduced. Short, focused lessons preserve your child's natural delight and curiosity.

5 lessons · 10 living book recommendations

Stage 3 · Ages 5–7 · Blending & Word Building

Sounds become words. Working through word families, your child begins to blend, visualize, and write. They'll start their own personal Word Book — a growing treasury of every word they can read and write.

5 lessons · 15 living book recommendations

Stage 4 · Ages 6–8 · Reading Living Books

The beautiful transition: from word lists to real books. Lessons begin with a passage read aloud by a good reader, then your child reads portions independently. Copywork from beautiful passages reinforces handwriting and spelling at the same time.
