Tulum, Mexico – May 22, 2025 – A sudden surge in tourism has prompted the local government in Mexico to fast-track several infrastructure projects aimed at improving transportation, utilities, and public safety.

Officials report that tourism numbers in Tulum have jumped by over 35% compared to the same period last year, driven by increased international flights, booming social media exposure, and the upcoming Tulum International Airport set to open later this year. The influx has created both opportunities and challenges for the rapidly developing town.

Governor Mara Lezama announced a 400-million-peso investment to enhance roads, expand the local hospital, and build a new eco-friendly public transportation system. “We want to ensure that Tulum remains a sustainable paradise for both visitors and residents,” she said at a press conference.

However, the growth hasn't come without complications. Local environmentalists have voiced concern over the impact of rapid development on the fragile ecosystems surrounding the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. “The jungle and coastline are under threat from unchecked construction,” said Diego Herrera, an activist with Tulum Verde.

Meanwhile, business owners in the region are calling the investment a win. Ana Martínez, who runs a boutique hotel near Aldea Zama, welcomed the new measures. “We’ve had problems with water pressure, slow internet, and traffic gridlock for years. These changes are long overdue.”

One of the most ambitious plans is a solar-powered shuttle line that will connect the beach zone with the town center and archaeological sites. The project is expected to be completed by early 2026 and could serve as a model for other tourist cities in Mexico.

Local police are also ramping up security efforts in tourist areas after a string of isolated petty thefts was reported during spring break. Authorities have deployed bilingual officers and increased night patrols to reassure visitors and maintain Tulum’s reputation as a safe destination.

As the Caribbean town continues to transition from a laid-back backpacker haven into a luxury hotspot, the eyes of Mexico—and the world—are watching how Tulum balances growth with sustainability.
