WHEN GOD BECOMES MORE IMPORTANT TO YOU

There may come a season in your life when your hunger for God begins to grow. Perhaps you have known about Him for years, attended church, prayed before important matches, or believed that He was watching over your life. Yet something deeper now begins to happen within you. You no longer want God to remain only part of your background. You want to know Him personally, understand His Word more clearly, recognise His voice, involve Him in your decisions, and live with a greater awareness of His presence. What once felt like a religious responsibility begins to become a genuine desire of the heart.

At the same time, your life as a professional footballer may be becoming increasingly demanding. The football world requires attention, preparation, discipline, physical effort, emotional control, and constant adaptation. Training sessions, recovery programmes, travelling, matches, meetings, medical treatment, tactical preparation, contracts, transfers, media responsibilities, family life, business interests, and the pressure to perform can fill almost every part of your week. Even during moments of physical rest, your thoughts may remain occupied with football. You may be thinking about your place in the team, your next match, a conversation with your coach, an injury, your contract situation, or what the next transfer window may bring.

This can create a difficult tension inside you. You sincerely want to spend more time with God, but you do not always know how to create the space you desire. You may intend to pray and then become tired. You may want to study Scripture, but another responsibility appears. You may find yourself saying, “I will do it later,” only to discover that another day has already passed. Because your hunger for God is real, you may feel guilty. You may begin to wonder whether God sees you differently because you have not spent as much time with Him as you would have liked.

Many believers carry the idea that they must become almost perfect before God can truly work in their lives. They believe they must be spiritually active at all times, perform at a high level, and prove through visible effort that they are serious about Him. But God is not waiting for you to completely exhaust yourself before He decides to love, help, guide, or receive you. His love is not a reward for religious performance. He does not love you more because you prayed for three hours, and He does not stop loving you because you struggled to focus. His love is not increased by your best season and reduced by your most difficult one. God loves from the perfection of His own nature.
