The perimeter is the total distance around a shape. To find the perimeter of a rectangle, add all four sides together or use the formula:

P = 2L + 2W

A square is a special rectangle where all four sides are equal. To find the perimeter of a square, multiply one side length by 4:

P = 4s

Knowing how to find perimeter helps students measure borders, fences, picture frames, and many real-world objects. A common mistake students make is forgetting to count all four sides or confusing perimeter with area.
