Commercial and Army aircraft flew between the United States
and the West Coast of Africa during 1942 and the first half of 1943 carried the vast
majority of civilian airmail in both directions across the South Atlantic in this period.
Their primary purpose was the carriage of men and materiel in support of the British and American operations in North
Africa and the invasion of Sicily and Italy. Returning flights of the missions also
carried ferry pilots back to the United States after they had delivered their aircraft
from America to Africa.
